Jim has been a life-long sailor since his family bought a Sunfish in the early 60’s and sailed on Cape Cod Bay in Massachusetts. He was hooked as they say. His first boat was a 14.2 Capri Sloop which he, his wife Lynn, and son Scott sailed in the intracoastal waterway in North Carolina for several years.
Jim completed the ASA sailing classes of Coastal Cruising and Bareboat Chartering through the Waterways Sailing School in Wilmington, NC and has chartered sailboats in North Carolina, Florida and the Virgin Islands.
Jim has been a Member of the Finger Lakes Chapter since 2007. He is a current member of the Finger Lakes Yatch Club and owns Brewster, a 1995 Hunter 336. He became the Squadron Education Officer in 2017 after serving as its ASEO for several years. In 2019 he became the Squadron Commander with a focus on Boating Education, Safety, and Community Service. Jim has completed the USPS courses, seminars and Boat Operator Certification skills tests for Senior Navigator and Inland Navigator.
In the past several years, taking advantage of the skills built on the water, Jim and Lynne have chartered monohull and catamaran sailboats in Florida on the east and west coasts. Jim was also a crew member on S/V Tomfoolery in the Sam Wetherill Ocean Race in 2021.

Jim started sailing in 2007 on beautiful Seneca Lake with his wife Susan. They learned a lot that first summer, most importantly how to reef early! Never having been seriously involved with boats led Jim and Sue to conclude they needed to learn and the Power Squadron provided that education along with all of the great boating friends they have made in Watkins Glen. Jim and Sue are both power and sail boat owners and enjoy cruising. They have rented a boat in San Diego and managed to motor it out of the bay and into the Pacific Ocean and back safely.
Jim enjoys taking the classes and giving back as an instructor.
